Gemstone Buying Guide
Everything you need to know before buying a natural gemstone online.
Natural vs. Synthetic
Natural gemstones form over millions of years inside the Earth and contain unique inclusions. Synthetic stones are lab-created, chemically identical but lack natural inclusions and astrological energy. Always insist on a certificate from a recognized lab.
Certificates That Matter
GIA (Gemological Institute of America), IGI (International Gemological Institute), GRS (GemResearch Swisslab), Gübelin and SSEF are globally trusted. For India, GJEPC and IIGJ are reputed. Always verify the certificate number on the lab's official website.
The 4 Cs — Color, Clarity, Cut, Carat
Color: hue, tone, saturation. Vivid pure hues command premium. Clarity: fewer eye-visible inclusions = higher value. Cut: defines brilliance and sparkle. Carat: 1 carat = 0.2 g; bigger isn't always better — quality first.
Treatment Disclosure
Heat treatment is common and accepted for sapphires and rubies. Beryllium diffusion, glass filling and dyeing significantly reduce value and energy. Reputable sellers disclose all treatments on the certificate.
