Rashi Gemstones — the stone for every zodiac sign
Vedic astrology reads your rashi (the sidereal moon sign) while Western astrology reads your sun sign. Both traditions prescribe stones, and they rarely agree. Here is the full chart, sign by sign, with the wearing conventions and the questions to ask before you buy.
Sun sign (Western)
Calculated from the tropical zodiac, which starts at the vernal equinox. Only the birth date matters, and the stone is a monthly birthstone — the modern list published by the American jewellery trade in 1912 and revised since. It is a calendar tradition rather than a chart reading.
Rashi / moon sign (Vedic)
Calculated from the sidereal zodiac against fixed stars, using date, exact time and place of birth. The stone comes from the lord of your rashi and from which planets are strong or afflicted in the chart, so two people born the same day can be told to wear different gems.

Should I choose a gemstone by my rashi or by my sun sign?
Vedic astrology (jyotisha) uses the rashi — the sidereal sign your Moon occupied at birth — so the stone is chosen from the lord of that sign and the strength of the planets in your chart. Western astrology uses the tropical sun sign and assigns a birthstone by calendar month. The two systems answer different questions, which is why the same birthday can point to Red Coral in one tradition and Diamond in the other.
Why is my Vedic sign different from the sign I always read about?
Western sun signs are measured from the moving vernal equinox, while Vedic rashis are measured against the fixed stars. The gap between the two, called ayanamsha, is currently about 24 degrees, so a Vedic rashi usually falls one sign earlier than the Western sun sign for the same date.
Do I need my birth time to get a rashi gemstone recommendation?
For the moon sign you need the date, time and place of birth, because the Moon moves through a rashi in roughly two and a quarter days. Without a time, an astrologer can only give a probable rashi.
Can I wear a birthstone and a rashi ratna together?
Usually yes, as long as the two stones are not prescribed for planets the tradition treats as unfriendly — the classic caution is pairing Blue Sapphire with Ruby, Pearl or Red Coral. Ask before combining them in one hand.
What carat weight is normally suggested?
Traditional practice scales weight to body weight rather than to a fixed number, and prescriptions in India commonly fall between 3 and 7 carats for sapphires and coral. Treat any single number you read online as a starting point, not a rule.
Does an astrological gemstone have to be untreated?
Jyotisha texts value natural, undamaged stones, so heavily treated, glass-filled or fracture-filled material is avoided for remedial use. Ask for a laboratory report that states the treatment status before you buy.
Is there scientific evidence that gemstones change outcomes?
No. Astrological gemstone practice is a cultural and religious tradition, not a medical or scientific one. We sell certified natural gemstones and describe the tradition accurately; we do not promise results.
What if my prescribed stone is out of budget?
Every planetary gem has an accepted upratna — a substitute of the same colour family, such as Yellow Topaz for Yellow Sapphire or Moonstone for Pearl. Substitutes are traditionally worn in a larger size.
